On safari with kids
Taking children on a safari in Africa can be an unforgettable family experience. As both a father and a safari guide, I’ve seen how the right approach can fuel a child’s curiosity and create lifelong memories. Our daughter Mara has been coming along on safari since she was still in diapers. It’s all about maintaining balance—combining excitement with safety, and fun with respect for wildlife. Below I’ll expand on my experiences as a safari guide and will provide some tips for families with children planning a safari.
My personal experience as a guide
I’ve had children of all ages with me on safari. One Dutch family even booked a private tour while their youngest was just six months old—changing a diaper in the middle of a lion sighting is certainly memorable! Of course, that’s an extreme example, but it also shows that everything is possible—and safe—if you plan carefully and work with the right guide. Let me share a few recommendations with you.
Set realistic expectations
From a father’s viewpoint, children have shorter attention spans and thrive with hands-on, engaging activities. Opt for shorter morning or afternoon game drives to keep them interested. Look specifically for lodges or tours that feature “child-friendly” itineraries—these often include guides skilled at creating experiences to younger explorers.
Prioritise safety
Guides know the area and where it’s safe to stop or explore. Travelling with an experienced safari guide will make sure you are in safe hands. However, parents play a key role in ensuring rules are followed:
- Teach children to stay seated and quiet around wildlife. Sudden movements or sounds might scare animals away.
- When I bring a family on safari, I always bring essentials like water, snacks, and a first-aid kit. Feel free to take other essentials with that apply to your family.
- Keep clothing functional and in neutral colors to blend with the environment. Bring layers as sometimes there is a big temperature change when the sun is under.
Together, parents and guides can create a safe space for everyone to learn about the wild.
Engage your kids curiosity
One of the best ways to pique a child’s interest is to let them play detective. Tracking footprints, identifying animal calls, or spotting camouflage patterns can engage young minds. As a guide, I love seeing how children get excited when we are on the track of a lion. Some children also do well by having a booklet where they can tick the boxes of the animals they’ve spotted.
Teach respect for wildlife
Ethical safaris are very important to me. Children often get excited when they spot a lion or elephant for the first time. We can use that enthusiasm to teach them about animal behaviors and why we maintain distance. Encourage them to ask questions and observe quietly. Respecting wildlife helps children develop empathy for living creatures and an understanding of conservation efforts. Especially for children living in area’s of the world where the distance to nature is greater.
You will have to book a private safari with children
All safari guides are required to offer only private safaris to families with children under 12. Although this option is typically more expensive than a regular safari, it provides a more personalized experience. The itinerary can be adapted to your family’s interests—whether you’d like to focus on finding lions, elephants, or any other species your kids are excited to see.
Would I recommend bringing kids on a safari?
Definitely! A safari is an incredible experience for families with children. While there are important considerations, it makes for an unforgettable family vacation. I’m happy to assist with any preparations and guide you on a safari that suits your family perfectly.
